Girl, Positive is a movie on Lifetime it came on a while back but I saw it today and here are my thoughts on it.
I was glad that the movie portrayed HIV from a white upper middle class female standpoint not blacks, gays, or Hispanics because it s a disease that everyone can get and does get! It's a problem facing our whole society even though most new cases are African-American women.
The guy she got HIV from told her "I promise I'll be careful" after he told her he didn't have a condom. That might be the stupidest thing I've ever heard in my life, but I'm pretty sure people say that type of thing to other people all the time. She was 16 or 17 but I knew at 16 that an excuse or statement like that was not going to fly with me. Condoms are everywhere. They basically hand them out here in Atlanta and probably all over the country. Honestly you will be more embarrassed ending up with an STD or HIV than asking for a condom REALLY!?!?!
I'm pretty sure I got my education about HIV from television, maybe Oprah did a special or something. Oh and I had a book about "sex and growing up" but I was lucky that I read and watched tv, because School never talked about this nor did my mother. I don't think she ever mentioned honestly. I'm sure most kids grew up like this but didn't have the resources like I did. Even in college the 1st week during orientation we went over everything in detail but it hasnt been mentioned since. Its been almost two years and if you didnt go to the seminar or you transferred in later you never heard that and thats a shame. I guess I'll talk to my friends to double check their info!
Wrap it up y'all dang!
if u knew me you would understand!
